- Course objectives
- The goal of neural science is to understand the mind - how we perceive, move, think, and remember. We emphasize that behavior can be examined at the level of individual nerve cells by seeking answers to five basic questions: How does the brain develop. How do nerve cells in the brain communicate with one another. How do different patterns of interconnections give rise to different perceptions and motor acts. How is communication between neurons modified by experience. How is that communication altered by diseases.
- Syllabus
- Neural science is based on the integration of morphology and function. Excitable Tissue: Nerve. Synaptic and Junctional Transmission. Initiation of Impulses in Sense Organs. Reflexes. Cutaneous, Deep and Visceral Sensation. Vision. Hearing and Equilibrium. Smell and Taste. Alert Behavior, Sleep and the Electrical Activity of the Brain. Control of Posture and Movement. The Autonomic Nervous System. Central Regulation of Visceral Function. Neural Basis of Instinctual Behavior and Emotions."Higher Functions of the Nervous System": Conditioned Reflexes, Learning and Related Phenomena.
