Course objectives
The aim of the course is to obtain knowledge on essential metabolic processes on the cell level.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student gains basic knowledge about:
- enzyme function and factors influencing enzyme reactions;
- metabolic pathways of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins;
- cellular bioenergetics;
- composition and properties of cell membranes and transport systems across membranes;
- proteosynthesis and types of posttranslational modifications;
- structure and function of proteins;
- structure and function of hemoglobin.
Syllabus
  • Enzymes - characteristics of biocatalysis, classes of enzymes. Kinetics of enzyme reactions. Determination of catalytic activity, factors influencing catalytic activity.
  • Enzyme cofactors - overview of structures and functions related to vitamins. General principles of metabolism. Biological oxidation. Macroergic compounds.
  • Mutual relations of nutrient conversion. Citrate cycle. Respiratory chain. Oxidative phosphorylation. Reactive oxygen species, antioxidants.
  • Carbohydrate digestion. Glucose and glycogen metabolism.
  • Pentose cycle. Metabolism of fructose and galactose. Mutual transformations of carbohydrates in the cell, formation of sugar derivatives.
  • Protein digestion and intracellular degradation. General mechanisms of amino acid biodegradation. Detoxification and transport of ammonia.
  • Metabolism of individual amino acids.
  • Lipid digestion. Fatty acid metabolism. Ketogenesis. Synthesis of triacylglycerols.
  • Metabolism of phospholipids and glycolipids. Formation of eicosanoids. Synthesis and conversion of cholesterol, bile acids.
  • Heme synthesis. Hemoglobin, myoglobin. Hemoglobinopathy.
  • Metabolism of nucleotides and their bases.
  • DNA replication and transcription. Regulation of gene expression.
  • Proteosynthesis and posttranslational modifications of the polypeptide chain.
