Course objectives
The subject tuition is based on the requests of the Curriculum of Educational Programme for Pre-school Education, which appeals on the development of the communicative abilities of pupils which concentrate on the mastering of the speech, the ability to express oneself in common everyday situations, to master the skills which preceed reading and writing. The subject objective is the orientation in questions of the language culture and laying the basics of learning the phonetical aspect of the language. The students recognise the language in its standard and codification, get acquainted with the codificational and other scholarly literature which retains the language corectness, the stress is imposed on the stylistic refinement of the communication. When recognising the phonetical aspect of the language, the study concentrates on the proper orthoepy in communication, on the division of coherent speech and on further phonetical and phonological phenomena in our communication. It is necessary to be fully orientated in Czech spelling rules.
Syllabus
  • 1) The concept of the language culture. Oral and written language. 2) The basic expectations of the language culture, the requests for cultivated communication on behalf of the speech culture.Formality and informality in social communication. 3) The usage, standard, codification; the term of language corectness and style refinement; the corectness in grammar, orthography and pronunciation. The most common language mistakes. The basic literature about the Czech language, the codification handbooks. 4) The phonetic structure of the language, phonetics and phonology. 5) The acoustic structure of the language; orthophony and orthoepy. 6) Speaking - physiology and analysis 7) Sounds - their articulation and classification; syllables. 8) The segmentation of coherent speech – the pause, intonation, cadence. 9) Sound means in coherent speech. 10) The formal pronunciation of home and loan words. 11) The acoustic structure of the Czech language and its graphical building; ortography.

Teaching methods
The type of tuition: a seminar. Seminar credit exercises focused on the culture of written and oral utterances and basics of Czech phonetics and phonology. During the term students prepare individual oral exercise. Continuous written checks will be set in the study: 1. Check of knowledge of the Czech rules of ortography: 1st part( marking sounds with letters, abbreviations, symbols), 2nd part (capital letters, word boundaries in writing, dividinf symbols). 3 orthographical mistakes in twenty sentences are allowed. 2. Overview of Czech sounds, phonetic transcription and calssification of sounds in Czech. 3 mistakes are allowed.
Assessment methods
The subject is finished with an exam. To finish the subject there are compulsory continuous check during the term, whose results are counted in the final assessment. According to valid Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University there will be no re-sit terms for these continuous checks set. Dates of these checks will be announced via IS at the beginning of the term. Fulfilling of these continuous chcecks are compulsory for applying for the exam. Attendance at consultations is compulsory according to valid Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University. To verify the knowledge the continuous written checks are set. The exam will be written and oral. According to valid Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University it is possible to apply in wiritng in justified cases for finishing the subject at second re-sit. EXAM TOPICS Linguistics, its stratification. Language and speech. Linguistic culture and language correctness. Czech national language and its departments. Phonetics and phonology. Definition, basic concepts. Phonetic transcription. Speech, physiology and analysis. Hearing speech. Sounds. Classification of Czech vowels and consonants, diphthongs. Syllable. Phonology. The ratio of phonetics and phonology. Basic phonological concepts. Ortophony and orthoepy. Sound means in coherent speech - word stress, sentence segment, pauses, speech rate. Intonation. Cadence and anti-cadence. Literary pronunciation of home words. Character. Quality and quantity of vowels. Voicing assimilation. The pronunciation of double consonants. Simplification of consonant clusters. Literary pronunciation of loan words. Record of spoken utterance(graphemics). Orthography and its codification.
