Course objectives
This course aims at a long-time incoherent film/media studies-education relationship. The body of the course is focused on improving a number of teacher's analytical approaches and his or her critical sensibility to media culture in general. The principal part of the course's work lies in students' activity as well as in self-assessment of proposed curriculum innovations. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course students should be able: to understand and explain the main principles and theoretical and/or historical aspects of film and media education in the Czech Republic; to propose his or her own media education curriculum or at least to add a certain amount of innovation to concurrent elementary secondary curriculum; to deal with the specific requirements of concurrent mass-mediated world when working as a elementary/secondary school teacher; to assess a number of educational, instructional, aesthetic, social, cultural, economical and technological merits digital media possess

  • 1. Film and media culture: A brief methodological introduction.
  • 2. Traditional film theory and historiography vs. New Film History, fundamental differences and possible film studies-educational sciences relationships.
  • 3. Non-fiction cinema.
  • 4. Film and general values, emotions, symbols and ideology.
  • 5. The questions of film criticism.
  • 6. The modes of reception: viewers and audiences.
  • 7. Youths and practical fimmaking.
  • 8. Television and its place in education I: Institution, schemes, genres.
  • 9. Television and its place in education II: reception and critical approaches.
  • 10. Digital media and CG games from a teacher's point of view.
  • 11. Media education and curriculum creation process.
  • 12. Conclusions and analysis.

Assessment methods
The final assessment will be based on regular participance in the class (at least a 70% visit is mandatory) and guided discussion on media education topics. Please pay attention to to the fact there is a substantial reading duty assigned to this course.
