- Course objectives
- The course concentrates on the summary the problems of an auxiliary linguistic discipline - phonetics. Its aim is to help students to see the importance of phonetics for understanding language, to clarify the meaning of commonly used terms, and to interprete scientific information.

- II. Spoken and written language, its function and relationships.
- III. Phonetic transcription, its principles and types.
- IV. Methods of phonetic analysis of speech.
- V. The biological basis of speech.
- VI. Articulation; place and aspect of articulation; articulatory co-ordination and phonetic settings.
- VII. Vocoid segments. Vocoid articulation.
- VIII. Consonants; consonants system.
- IX. Acoustic level of speech.
- X. The prosodic organisation of speech.
- XI. The metrical and temporal organisation of speech.
- XII. Intersegmental articulatory co-ordination.

- Assessment methods
- The course is a series of seminars where basic phonetic concepts acquired from the lecture and/or self-study are applied and demonstrated on concrete languages. It focuses on phonetic analysis of speech, including phonetic transcription. The course cannot be passed without regular attendance.
