Course objectives
The main objective of the course is seeking continuity and discontinuity in the evolution of Portuguese Literature from its beginning up to the present day. The other aim of the course is to identify and explain basic notions related to the genres, themes and other literary problems in question. It will be the students task to apply the beforehand defined terms during the analysis and imply their proper conclusions from observed
Syllabus
  • 1. Ascension and fall of the Portuguese empire (continuation) 2. Continuity and discontinuity of Portuguese poetry from its beginning to the 20th century: a) Galician-Portuguese lyric and b) satiric poetry and its continuation c) classic and mannerism d) the sonnet and the "classical" tradition 3. The main tendencies and currents in the 19th and 20th century poetry. 4. Chivalric romance, sentimental novel, bucolic prose and moral or instructive tales 5. Compendium of Portuguese theatre.

Lecture: description of the literary field, explanation and definition of basic notions Seminar: application of the theoretical knowledge on authentic texts
Assessment methods
Obrigatory for examination: active participation in the course, oral presentation in the course, written essay (topic should be consulted until Christmas), reading. Oral examination consist of 2 questions: 1. basic orientation in the history of portuguese literature, 2. topics on base of generic and thematic (dis)continuity, including analyses of selected texts.
