Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to enhance the student's ability to read and translate Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico (Book 1 and 6) and to prepare them for the qualifying exam.
At the end of the course students: will be acknowledged with the vocabulary of the particular latin text of Caesar´s De bello Gallico in order to adequately translate the text without the use of a dictionary; will be able to explain the grammatical features present in the text (in correspondence to the course "Latin Grammar I and II").
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Primary grammatical analysis of Caesar's text.
  • 3.-4. Caesar's most used grammatical constructions: ablative absolute, accusative with infinitive, temporal sentences, indirect speech etc.
  • 5.-8. Practice of adequate translation of original Latin text. (Stress on the differences between Latin syntactic constructions and Czech modern equivalents.)
  • 9.-10. Comparison of Latin original text and existing Czech translations.
  • 11.-12. Intuitive translation of yet unknown syntactical constructions.
  • 13. Interpretation of the cultural and historical background.

Teaching methods
The course is realized as seminar. Students are required to translate and gramatically analyze particular chapters in advance at home with the use of a dictionary and the online help available through e-learning course. The other condition is regular involvement in homework assignments (min. 75%), available also through e-learning course, as well as attendance and participation in the course. During the classes, the text is translated in groups and the grammar is explained.
Assessment methods
The credit is awarded based on the succesfull homeworks in e-course (min. 75%) and regular attendance in classes.
