Course objectives
The course is based on an annotated reading of Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico. During the course, students read the 1st and 6th book of the Caesar's work. The stress is laid mainly on the understanding, adequate translation and ability of explaining the grammar (in correspondence to the course "Latin Grammar I and II"). The course is reccomended to students in the first study-year and it prepares them for the advance (move-on) exam in the end of the first study-year.
Syllabus
  • Gramatical analysis of Caesar's text.
  • Caesar's most used grammatical constructions: ablativus absolutus, accusativus cum infinitivo, temporal sentences, indirect speech etc.
  • Practice of adequate translation of the Latin original text. (Stress on the differences between Latin syntactic constructions and the Czech modern ekvivalents.)
  • Comparation of the Latin original text and existing Czech translations.
  • Intuitive translation of yet unknown syntactical constructions.
  • Interpretation of the cultural-historical background.
