Course objectives
Translations of works from minority literatures are rare in Czech literature. We have been able to come to an agreement with the Větrné Mlýny publishing house on the publication of a book of short stories written by Native Americans and translated by students of our Department under teacher supervision. The book should result from the present course. We will cooperate with the students of courses dealing with Native Americans on the selection of short stories and the overall composition of the book. The crucial part of the course will then be formed by the translation itself. A number of general problems will have to be dealt with (cultural backgroud, style, terminology, names and toponyms, etc.). This means that we will attempt to have a very open form of cooperation between the teachers and students and between the students themselves. Each short story will be translated by several students, so you must understand not every translation will be published in the end. The selected version will then be discussed and improved by all members of the course. Even translations by students who do not attend the course may be included in the final version of the book. The course will meet rather irregularly, but will require a great deal of individual work and dedication. No previous exposure to Native American topics is required, so even if you don't know much about Indians as such, don't hesitsate to join us. The first meeting takes place in room 31 on Wednesday 21/02 at 12:00.
