Course objectives
The lecture connects on History of Philosophy I and deals with most important thinkers, streams and problems in the philosophy from the age of Hellenism to the end of Middle Ages.
Syllabus
  • 1. Hellenistic philosophical schools:
  • a) scepticism,
  • b) epicureanism,
  • c) stoicism.
  • 2. The end of Greek philosophy - the Neo-Platonists.
  • 2. The formation of the Christian thought - the apologets and Church fathers.
  • 3. The philosophy of the end of the Antique and change over the Greek thought heritage to the Middel Ages (St Augustine, Boëthius...).
  • 4. Main questions of the medieval philosophy:
  • a) the relation of God and world,
  • b) the relation between theology and philosophy,
  • c) the struggle for universals,
  • d) the proofs of the existence of God.
  • 5. The main characters of the medieval philosophy (Anselm, Abelard, St Thomas Aquinas).
