Course objectives
The lecture continues the course History of Philosophy I and deals with the most important thinkers, streams and problems in the philosophy from the age of Hellenism to the High Middle Ages.

After the completion of the course, students should be able to:
understand the basic problems; describe the thinking of the most important philosophers in the period from Hellenism to Thomas Aquinas.
Syllabus
  • 1. Hellenistic philosophical schools:
  • a) Scepticism,
  • b) Epicureanism,
  • c) Stoicism.
  • 2. The end of Greek philosophy - the Neo-Platonists.
  • 2. The formation of the Christian thought - the Apologists and Church fathers.
  • 3. The philosophy at the end of Antiquity and transformation of Greek thought heritage into the Middle Ages (Augustine, Boëthius...).
  • 4. Main questions of medieval philosophy:
  • a) the relation of God and world,
  • b) the relation between theology and philosophy,
  • c) the problem of universals,
  • d) the proofs of the existence of God.
  • 5. The main features of medieval philosophy (Anselm, Abelard, Thomas Aquinas).
