Course objectives
This course is focused on good grasp of the problem integration of the contemporary society. The course introduces to the wide social theory on these problems providing exposure to classical, modern, and contemporary theories of them. "New" concepts which dominate in the field of contemporary European social policy, social exclusion, social inclusion or social integration and social cohesion will be discussed. The course consists of weekly thematic modules that typically include textbook and other readings.

  • 1. Theory of reproduction and social inclusion 2. Theory of capitals 3. Social reproduction 4. Individualization of society 5. Welfare state (a redistributive strategy of social inclusion). 6. Labour market, unemployment, marginalisation, flexibility (an integrative strategy of inclusion). 7. Poverty, and social exclusion produced by poverty. 8. Solidarity, social inclusion, and social cohesion. 9. Theory of migration and multicultural society in Europe. 10. Spatial exclusion 11. Culture of poverty

Teaching methods
lectures 1, 5 hours per week, reading, plus tutorials once per semester.
Assessment methods
Lectures, class discussion. Each week’s study will typically involve required readings and viewing of lecture materials. Written examination, writen tests (80 % of the final mark).
