- Course objectives
- At the end of the course, students should be able to: - understand the use of analytical reactions by analysis - choose technique of samples treatment - outline parameters important by instrumental methods - compare capacities for classical, electrochemical, spectrochemical and separation methods - propose suitable analytical method for practical application
- Syllabus
- 1. Analytical chemistry and chemical analysis. Sampling,sample dissolution, destruction of organic materials. Analytical reactions, chemical equilibrium, activity, ionic strength.
- 2. Qualitative analysis.
- 3. Gravimetric analysis, precipitation, determination of Fe.
- 4. Volumetric analysis, equivalence point. Acid-base titrations. Acid-base equilibria, pH calculations, titration curves.
- 5. Precipitation titrations, the solubility product, adsorption indicators.
- 6. Complexometric titrations. Complexes, chelates, stability constant. Chelometric titrations, indicators, determination of Ca and Mg. Mercurimetric titrations.
- 7. Redox titrations, oxidation and reduction, the Nernst equation. Permanganate, dichromate titrations, iodometry.
- 8. Electroanalytical methods. Potentiometry, pH measurements, the glass pH electrode, ion-selective electrodes, potentiometric titrations, conductometric analysis.
- 9. Polarography, voltammetry, anodic stripping voltammetry, coulometry.
- 10. Molecular spectroscopy. Absorption spectrometry in UV/VIS regions, infrared spectrometry, Beer's Law.
- 11. Fluorometry, phosphorimetry.
- 12. Atomic spectroscopy. Atomic absorption spectrometry, emission spectroscopy, flame emission spectrometry, ICP.
- 13. Electromigration methods. Chromatographic methods, classifications, gas chromatography.
- 14. High-performance liquid chromatography.

- Teaching methods
- Education is performed as lectures with PowerPoint presentation and a few video recording. Understanding of principles of analytical methods, measurements, data evaluate and the use in practical analysis is emphasized.
- Assessment methods
- Final assessment (at the end of semester) is by written examination. It is not test but 30 questions, which frequently require description, explanation or schematization of asked topic. Questions have points according to their difficulty. During the semester, students have to accomplish assigned computations and tests.
