Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected advanced techniques of:
identification and investigation of metal materials
identification of corrosion products
treatment of silver artefacts
electrochemical methods for study of corrosion processes
fabrication of copper patina using chemical and electrochemical methods
Learning outcomes
Students will gain practical experience in advanced techniques of identification, investigation, study of corrosion processes and treatment of (not only) cultural heritage artefacts made of metal materials.
Syllabus
  • 1) Defects investigation of metallic materials (X-ray methods, gamagraphy, ultrasound, etc.)
  • 2) Study of corrosion products (X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy)
  • 3) Structure study of historical metallic materials (metallography, microhardness and macrohardness proofs)
  • 4) Structure study of historical metallic materials (electron microscopy)
  • 5) Determination of corrosion velocity
  • 6) Electrochemical investigation of corrosion
  • 7) Photometric determination of iron - corrosion velocity determination
  • 8) Chemical and electrochemical fabrication of copper patina
  • 9) Corrosion of silver - reasons and kinetics
  • 10) Corrosion of silver - electrochemical reduction of corrosion products
