- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected advanced techniques of:
identification and investigation of metal materials
identification of corrosion products
treatment of silver artefacts
electrochemical methods for study of corrosion processes
fabrication of copper patina using chemical and electrochemical methods - Learning outcomes
- Students will gain practical experience in advanced techniques of identification, investigation, study of corrosion processes and treatment of (not only) cultural heritage artefacts made of metal materials.
- Syllabus
- 1) Defects investigation of metallic materials (X-ray methods, gamagraphy, ultrasound, etc.)
- 2) Study of corrosion products (X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy)
- 3) Structure study of historical metallic materials (metallography, microhardness and macrohardness proofs)
- 4) Structure study of historical metallic materials (electron microscopy)
- 5) Determination of corrosion velocity
- 6) Electrochemical investigation of corrosion
- 7) Photometric determination of iron - corrosion velocity determination
- 8) Chemical and electrochemical fabrication of copper patina
- 9) Corrosion of silver - reasons and kinetics
- 10) Corrosion of silver - electrochemical reduction of corrosion products
