- Course objectives
- Biological activity of compounds and the methods of their measurements. Cell membrane structure. Membrane transport of polar and nonpolar molecules. Physico-chemical properties of compounds and their parametrisation. Hydrophobic parameters. Relative hydrophobicity of compounds. Parametrisation of the electronic and steric effects of molecules. Noncovalent interactions and their importance in biological systems. Quantitative structure-activity relationships. Hansch approach. Free-Wilson approach. Indicator variables. Regression analysis and its problems. Strategy in the statistical evaluation of real data sets. Design of biologically active molecules. Examples of evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of selected compounds. Other methods used in quantitative structure-activity relationships.
