Course objectives
At the end of this course students should be able to understand the principles of quantitative structure - activity relationships, choose the suitable parameters for the expression of physico-chemical properties of compounds, interpret the results.
Syllabus
  • Biological activity of compounds and the methods of their measurements. Cell membrane structure. Membrane transport of polar and nonpolar molecules.
  • Physico-chemical properties of compounds and their parametrisation. Hydrophobic parameters. Relative hydrophobicity of compounds.
  • Parametrisation of the electronic and steric effects of molecules. Noncovalent interactions and their importance in biological systems.
  • Quantitative structure-activity relationships. Hansch approach. Free-Wilson approach. Indicator variables.
  • Regression analysis and its problems. Strategy in the statistical evaluation of real data sets. Design of biologically active molecules.
  • Examples of evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of selected compounds. Other methods used in quantitative structure-activity relationships.

Teaching methods
The teaching methods make use of presentations on stencils. Presentations of the results of own research are included and used for the explanation of problems.
Assessment methods
The course is closed with an oral exam. The student answers 3 questions in the exam. The overall result of the exam is evaluated by the examiner.
