- Course objectives
- Students will be introduced with an overview of main groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria (including cyanobacteria), archaea and fungi. The student will understand the content of the following chapters: Structure and function of virus particle. Organization and function of prokaryotic cell. Eukaryotic microorganisms. Microbial growth. Nutritional requirements of microorganisms. Energetic metabolism of chemoorganotrophs, chemolithotrophs and photosynthetic microorganisms. Genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms. Microbial communities. Microorganisms in environment. Exploitation of microorganisms in industry. Main taxonomic groups of bacteria, archea and fungi. Microbial diseases and their control.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end this course, students should be able to: ;
- understand and explain dissimilarity between prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms ;
- comprehend relationship among microorganisms ;
- elucidate relation amongst microorganisms and environment ;
- document contribution of microorganisms to environmental changes ;
- illustrate use of microorganisms in biotechnology - Syllabus
- Main groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria, archaea and fungi, their phylogenetic position. Prokaryotic microorganisms - bacteria and archaea, prokaryotic cell, significant taxonomic groups and their ecology, motility and chemotaxis of bacteria. Sporulation.
