Course objectives
The student
- learns about current methods in environmental education (EE) and evaluates their suitability for inclusion in teaching with regard to educational objectives and the target group.
- compares educational methods, programs, and approaches; evaluates them; considers their effective use in practice.
- applies acquired knowledge and skills in the field of EE.

The student will
- meet with inspiring educators and experts in the field of EE.
- actively engage and share their opinions, insights, and experiences from practice and their specialized education, engaging in meaningful discussions and arguments.
- become familiar with curricular documents and relevant resources for environmental education.
- navigate the Framework Educational Program for Grammar Schools (RVP Gy) in relation to current EE topics and become more acquainted with the Recommended Expected Outcomes of the cross-cutting topic of EE for grammar schools.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
Describe the age and developmental characteristics of students in relation to environmental education (EE).
Know the basic curricular and legislative documents relevant to EE.
Compare and critically evaluate the methods and methodological approaches used in EE.
Navigate the Expected Learning Outcomes (ELO) of EE and propose suitable methods for achieving the outcomes in various key activities of the ELO for EE.
Define current significant environmental topics and describe trends in environmental education.
Understand the approaches to teaching selected environmental topics (e.g., how to teach about global climate change, etc.).
Syllabus
  • 1) Concepts and directions of environmental education and awareness (EVVO); goals and means of environmental education; the role of the school EVVO coordinator; aspects of developmental psychology in EE.
  • 2) Approaches and resources for education about climate change.
  • 3) Ecological educational programs and the use of activating methods in teaching, place-based learning, learning in the real world, didactic games (simulation and role-playing games for older students).
  • 4) Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) and the E-U-R model (Evocation-Understanding-Reflection).
  • 5) Inquiry-based teaching, outdoor subjects, learning in real environments.
  • 6) Comprehensive and long-term methods and methodological approaches in EE (e.g., School for Sustainable Living, Eco-School, Active Citizens, school mini-projects with concrete outcomes, etc.).
Teaching methods
Discussion, lecture, practical examples,theoretical preparation, working with texts, individual outputs, experiential learning
Assessment methods
Presentations, individual and group outputs, active participation in discussions, 70% attendance at seminars.
