Course objectives
The subject of Palliative Medicine offers the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge and skills in the care of advanced patients who are incurably ill (oncological and non-cancerous). The lectures and seminars will include treatment of the most common symptoms, supportive communication rules and psychosocial aspects of care. Participants will become acquainted with the ethical and legal framework of providing palliative care. There will be 2 excursions to hospices in the Brno region. The subject is finished by colloquium.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- Appropriately assess and palliatively address the most common physical and psychological symptoms of advanced stages of incurable diseases;
- in the alternative, communicate with patients and their families about severe diagnosis, prognosis and palliative care plan;
- to know the ethical and legal context of medical decision making in patients at the end of life; will know the organization of palliative care in the Czech Republic
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • Základní pojmy: paliativní péče, nevyléčitelné onemocnění, závěr života, kvalita života, hospic, limitace léčby, eutanázie
  • Paliativní management nejčastějších symptomů pokročilého onemocnění: bolest, dušnost, anorexie, nevolnost, zvracení, průjem, zácpa, únava
  • Paliativní management pokročilých stádií neonkologických onemocnění: CHOPN, CHSS, chronické renální selhání, neurodegenerativní onemocnění, syndrom geriatrické křehkosti
  • Psychiatrické syndromy v závěru života: úzkost, deprese, delirium, poruchy spánku
  • Psychologické a sociální aspekty paliativní péče
  • Etické a právní aspekty paliativní péče
  • Komunikace a pacientem v závěru života: diagnoza, prognoza, plán paliativní péče
  • Paliativní péče v různých prostředích: hospic, nemocnice, ARO/JIP, domácí prostředí, organizace paliativní péče v ČR
