- Course objectives
- Graduate in chemistry has knowledge that is necessary for understanding of chemical principles applied in further study subjects, especially in biochemistry. General chemistry provides students with understanding of solution properties and basic physico-chemical laws. Inorganic chemistry gives the overview of properties of elements and inorganic compounds important for medicine, nutrition and toxicology. Organic and bioorganic chemistry enable students to become familiar with compounds and reactions taking part in metabolism and with organic compounds that have importance in toxicology.
- Syllabus
- Information concerning medical chemistry. The basic chemical terms: substances, particles, amount of substance, some properties of a single particle and molar quantities. Electron configurations in atoms. Types of bonds, electronegativity. Non-covalent bonds and attraction forces.
- Chemical reactions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium. The driving force of chemical reactions, free Gibbs energy.
- Solutions of substances. Dissociation of electrolytes, the equilibria in electrolyte solutions.Precipitation reactions.
- Protolytic reactions: acids and bases, pH values, hydrolysis of salts, buffers.
- Oxidation-reduction reactions, redox potentials, the e.m. force of a voltaic cell and the relation to the reaction free energy change.

- Assessment methods
- Teaching form are lectures. Supplementary subjects are seminars and practicals (VSLC011c and VSLC011c).
Student must have course-unit credit of seminar and practicals in the day of exam.
Examination from Medical chemistry is only written. The test consists from two parts.
The first part comprises 25 questions and is solved on computers in the computer room of Department of Biochemistry (time limit 45 min): 4-5 calculations (concentration, pH, buffers, osmotic pressure) – see seminars
simple questions (multiple choice or free answer)
structural formulas (essential organic and inorganic compounds)
Each correct answer counts for 1 point, in one question is possible to obtain 3 points. The maximal acquisition = 27 points.
The second part (time limit 45 min) comprises 3x5 problems, as active answers, from the three blocks (general + inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry). One block contains five parts (a-e), each part a-e is donated by 2 points. Maximal acquisition = 30 points .
Answers have to be very explicit. Write very legibly, illegible answers will not be assessed. - Language of instruction
