- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students should be able to: - understand and explain basic reactions which take place at the cellular level in living organisms - the grounds of cellular and molecular biology and genetics. - illustratively explain the center of a genetic code, its redundancy, universality, cause of origin and consequences of genetic (point) mutations by way of selected examples - describe the expression of genetic information in detail, particularly transcription and translation - explain nucleosome structure of chromosome - describe the course of cellular cycle and analyse the importance of its parts; student can relate the significance of understanding the conception of cellular cycle for applied science and for man’s healthy life – cancer treatment, stem cells, organ transplantation, pharmacogenetics - explain the terms: telomere, apoptosis, necrosis and importance of these structures and processes for cellular (organism’s) senescence and death - understand cell position in multicellular (human) organism, explain illustratively the process of signal reception and processing by cell, matter transport inside and out of a cell and the function of cytosceletal structures in eukaryotic cell
- Syllabus
- Expression of genetic information – model tasks. Molecular base of genetic, chromosome and genome mutations. News from molecular genetics: human genes for sports performance, for issue of pathological addictions leading to obesity, etc. Types of cells and tissues. Cell in light and electron microscope. Investigation and drawings of chosen histological sections. Fluorescent microscopy – principle, application. Direct and indirect fluorescence. Immunofluorescence. Visualization of microtubules and actin microfilaments by use of fluorescent microscopy. Demonstration of chromosome aberrations by use of fluorescent methods. Types of communication between a cell and a virus. Cell necrosis, cell apoptosis. Destiny of cells in multicellular (human) organism. Demonstrations of practical application of a video during lessons in primary schools with the aim to solve some chosen simple exercises from cytology.

- Teaching methods
- In the first part of a term students should put together 50 model tasks and experiments from the cellular and molecular biology/genetics and genetics field of study – transcription and translation of genetic information, DNA replication, point mutation process of origin. In the second part of a term, the topics in question are: surveying of selected histological sections, cells pictures and chosen parts of educational videoprograms that concern chapters on structure and function of various types of human body cells and tissues.
- Assessment methods
- Colloquium. At the end of this course, students complete a written test consisting of 50 questions. If they answer 35 questions correctly, they pass the test. After evaluation, a discussion follows in which the correct answers of previously asked questions are repeated and explained again.
