Course objectives
The course covers British literature from mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. At the end of the course, students will have gained a general insight into the period. Further, they will be able to identify, individually interpret, question,and critically evaluate major works of the period in the cultural, social and historical context.
Syllabus
  • 1. The Golden Age of the novel (the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens, W.M. Thackeray). 2. Victorian mores and their critique: R.L. Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, Wilkie Collins. 3. Escape from reality: Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear. 4. Decline of the empire: Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad. 5. Naturalism: Tess of the d´Urbervilles. 6. Modernism and its alternatives: Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce.
