Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills at the Intermediate Level. The basic study material is the coursebook New English File Intermediate supplemented by various additional materials. At the end of the course students should be able to: discuss everyday topics, communicate in everyday situations, read and listen to authentic texts at the Intermediate Level and communicate in the language fluently.
Learning outcomes
Student will:
- understand the main ideas of spoken and written interaction containing also unknown experssions; the topics may be abstract
- be able to react spontaneously while interacting with a native speaker
- express themselves more or less fluently in oral production
- be able to fluently express their ideas in written production, explain their opinion on current issues
- be able to distinguish between formal and informal language
- use idiomatic expressions
Syllabus
  • The syllabus includes: speaking activities reading comprehension writing narratives listening comprehension
  • interaction. Students will participate in weekly activities and complete work outside of class in the coursebook and on Moodlinka.
  • New English File Upper-Intermediate Unit 7: sturctures after WISH, clauses of contrast and purpose, relative clauses, -ed and -ing adjectives and related verbs, expressions with go, prefixes.

Assessment methods
Students have to pass 2 short progress tests (70%) focused on the vocabulary and grammar covered during the term,to give a presentation, to contribute to discussion fora regularly and do 2 placement tests (at the beginning and in the end of the course). Students have to prepare for lessons throughout the whole term and do homework for each lesson, which is the base for their active participation in the seminars. Most of the work is based on students' self-study.
