Course objectives
Main target of this course is to bring the survey of the most important trends and both the significant authors and works within the history of Serbian literature since the ancient times within the end of the 19th century. Lecture gives information about the Cyril and Methodius tradition; analyzing legends, life of Serbian sovereigns; pursuing the reflection of Kosovo Polje (Blackbird's Field) in folk literature; focuses to the literature of Ottoman period and subsequently, in details, to the literature of awakening national self-reflection (D. Obradović).
Syllabus
  • First manuscripts of Serbian state. Cyril and Methodius fundaments of Serbian literature. Great Moravian mission and establishment of Old-Serbian liturgy. Great Moravian manuscripts (especially Moravian – Pannonian legends)
  • Actions of Cyril and Methodius students and establishment of Bulgarian literary centers and their influence to the origins of Serbian literature.
  • Development of Serbian literature in 12th to14th century: St. Sava, Stevan Prvovenčani, Domentian, Toedosije, Danilo Stariji – golden era of old Serbian literature.
  • Legends on prince Lazar and genesis of Kosovo myth (e.g. Jefimija, Danilo III.)
  • Acting of Bulgarian exiles (Camblak, KOnstantin Kostenečki, etc.)
  • Stevan Lazarević and his era
  • Dimitrije Kantakuzin and literature of Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica) of last Branković princes Role of monasteries and first period of Turkish supremacy (Paisije, Srbljak, etc.)
  • Serbian hajduk and historical folk epics and its cycles. Folk prose and lyrics).
  • Jiří Branković and his historical opus
  • Russo – Slavonic period of Serbian literature and Serbian baroque (Žefarović, Jovan Rajić, Orfelin)
  • The Enlightenment (Dositej Obradović and his epigones)
  • Serbian Sentimentalism and Classicism (Lukijan Mušicki, etc.).

Assessment methods
Completing of this subject would be thru awarding a credit. Stable presence in lectures, active participation in seminars and compilation of allocated seminary work, involved in studying materials within the IS are the integral precondition for awarding the credit.
