Course objectives
The course covers basic aspects of the structure and function of the immune system in humans. Topics include mechanisms of non- specific immunity with main emphasis on the inflammatory process, such as humoral and cellular branches of the specific immune response. It includes mainly mechanisms of activation of the immune response and its regulation. Special emphasis is given to mucosal immunity and immune response to microbes and immunoprophylaxis to infectious and non-infectious diseases in the orofacial area. After finishing the course the students will understand the mechanisms of the immune response in physiology, and the knowledge will enable them to understand the immune system disturbances leading to immunopathological diseases.
Learning outcomes
The student will understand basic mechanisms of functioning of the immune system both in the component of innate and adaptive immunity. The student will understand the importance of the immune system in the defense against infectious agents. The student will be familiar with the compartmentalization of the immune system with an emphasis on the mucosal immune system. The student will be acquainted with the most important mechanisms leading to immunopathological diseases.
Syllabus
  • **November 6** Immunology: Historical development, current state, the role of immunology in medicine. The immune system as a physiological and pathogenetic principle. Basic characteristics of innate and adaptive immunity. Regionalization of immune responses, common mucosal immune system. Antigen-antibody reactions in vitro as the basis of immunological examination methods. **November 13** Cellular basis of the immune system: Primary and secondary lymphoid organs. Subpopulations of T, B, and NK lymphocytes. Professional phagocytes. Other cells involved in immune responses. Humoral components of immunity: Cytokines. Complement system. Immunoglobulins, biological properties of individual classes (IgG, A, M, E, D). Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies (preparation, diagnostic and therapeutic use). **November 20** Inflammation as a complex reaction of the innate immune system. Induction and development of adaptive immune responses (antibody production, cellular immunity). Immunological memory. Immunological tolerance. **November 27** Anti-infectious immunity. Vaccines and vaccination. Immunoglobulin preparations. Mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity in the oral cavity. Secretory IgA.
