Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the basics of intensive care medicine. The lecture consists of aetiology, diagnostics and treatment of the most frequent critical conditions. The specific management of the critically ill will be explained as advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basics of intensive care medicine
- know the cause, diagnosis and treatment of the most common critical conditions.
- know and master specific procedures in critical care medicine such as extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Resuscitation Algorithm
  • Defibrillation, cardioversion
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) Resuscitation algorithm
  • Bradycardia algorithm
  • Tachycardia algorithm
  • Pharmaceuticals used in ALS
  • Reversible causes of circulatory arrest
  • Specifics of pediatric CPR (PBLS, PALS)
  • ABCDE approach
  • Examination, patency and securing of the airway
  • Conventional and high-flow oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation
  • Respiratory insufficiency
  • Exacerbation of COPD/Asthma
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Sepsis and septic shock
  • Hypovolemic shock
  • Obstructive shock
  • Trauma and polytrauma
  • Disorders of consciousness: quantitative and qualitative

Teaching methods
Lectures are mandatory for students. The main teaching method is the presentations in the interactive syllabus Intensive Medicine - Practice.
Assessment methods
The lecture is completed with an OSCE exam
(Objective Structured Clinical Examination)
It consists of an online test and an OSCE oral exam.
The test and exam may include topics taught in the practice.
Due to scheduling, space and staffing constraints, it will be administered at the end of the semester during the exam period.
