Course objectives
After completion of the course student: understands elementary cellular processes; comprehends the complexity of intercellular communication and mutual regulation of individual cells in a multicellular organism; is able to explain the difference between healthy and pathologically-working cell; is able to express basic coherence between malfunction in cellular processes and development of diseases, especially hereditary diseases, cancers or developmental defects. Student is also able to apply this knowledge and skills in following subjects.
Syllabus
  • Cellular organization of living systems. Biopolymers.
  • Cell memory. Preservation and duplication of genetic information.
  • Expression of genetic information and its regulation.
  • Translation and protein metabolism.
  • Biomembranes and energy transformation. Membrane transport.
  • Organization of cell nucleus. Chromosomes.
  • Cytoskeleton. Motor proteins.
  • Cell cycle. Mitosis.
  • Cell interactions and signalling. Secretion pathway and endocytosis.
  • Stem cells and strategy of cellular therapy.
  • Neoplastic transformation of cells. Intracellular signal transduction.
  • From gene to trait: Mendelian genetics.
  • Mechanisms of DNA repair and genome stability. Mutations and hereditary diseases.
  • Genetic engineering. Human genome. Molecular disgnostics. Gene therapy.

Teaching methods
two-hour lecture per week
Assessment methods
The course is completed with a written multiple choice exam test containing 45 questions with 4 possible answers (1 to all answers are correct, negative marking for incorrect answers). The test is based on knowledge of all topics from lectures and practices. Student chooses all correct answers (minimum 1, maximum 4), negative marking is obtained for incorrect answers. To pass the exam, 20 points are needed (out of 45).
Succesfull passing of the subject's practice is required for attending the exam.
Attendance at the lectures is optional.
Language of instruction
