- Course objectives
- The course provides students with the knowledge of normative grammar of the Attic Greek dialect of the Classical period to a degree which is necessary for understanding Greek texts. The main aim of the course is an explanation of the normative grammar of the attic dialect in the classical period (in Athens, 5th century BC) to the extent necessary for understanding the original Greek text of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. In the first semester the students will become acquainted with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation, the grammatical system and the basic names and verbal paradigms, allowing orientation in simple, modified texts. They will also learn to use electronic resources to work with Greek texts (grammar, dictionaries, text databases, papyrological databases).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- be familiar with the Greek grammar system;
- determine the grammatical categories of nouns and verbs;
- understand the basic sentence structure;
- use Greek grammar and dictionaries and with their help to translate simple ancient Greek sentences;
- know the databases of Greek texts and work with them. - Syllabus
- 1. Alphabet, Greek pronunciation, diacritical and punctuation marks.
- 2. Grammatical structure of Greek.
- 3. Declension of o-stems.
- 4. Uncontracted vowel and consonant verbs in active voice.
- 5. Grammars, dictionaries, text databases, and work with them.
- 6. Accusative and nominative with the infinitive.
- 7. A-stems declension (feminine and masculine).
- 8. Augment.
- 9. Imperfektum active.
- 10. Mediopasivum and passivum.
- 11. participles, genitive absolute.
- 12. pesent of the verb "to be", the formation of adverbs, prepositions.

- Teaching methods
- Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, practice (grammar exercises and translation), reading of simple Greek texts, drill. Homework-tests in e-learning course.
- Assessment methods
- Students' active attendance during classes is necessary. Credits are obtained by passing the written test, which presupposes the knowledge of the first 5-6 lessons of the textbook Lexis. The test consists of a translation of sentences from Greek into Czech, identifying verb forms exercise and a translation of verb forms, declension of nouns and adjectives. Pass mark = 70%.The student can use a dictionary, grammar and other personal aids in paper form during the test.
