- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to enhance the student's ability to read and translate Caesar's Commentarii de bello Gallico (Book 1 and 6) and to prepare them for the qualifying exam.
At the end of the course students: should get internalized the vocabulary of the particular Latin Books from De bello Gallico in order to adequately translate the text without the use of vocabulary; should be able to explain the present grammar features in the text (in correspondence to the course "Latin Grammar I and II"). - Syllabus
- 1.-2. Grammatical analysis of Caesar's text.
- 3.-4. Caesar's most used grammatical constructions: ablative absolute, accusative with infinitive, temporal sentences, indirect speech etc.
- 5.-8. Practice of adequate translation of the Latin original text. (Stress on the differences between Latin syntactic constructions and the Czech modern equivalents.)
- 9.-10. Comparation of the Latin original text and existing Czech translations.
- 11.-12. Intuitive translation of yet unknown syntactical constructions.
- 13. Interpretation of the cultural and historical background.

- Teaching methods
- The course is realized as seminar. Students are required to translate and gramatically analyze particular chapters in advance at home with use of vocabulary and the online help available through e-learning course. The other condition is regular involvement in homework assignments (min. 75%), available also through e-learning course, as well as attendance and participation in the course. During the classes, the text is translated in group and the grammar is explained.

- The credit is awarded based on the succesfull homeworks in e-course (min. 75%) and regular attendance in classes.

- The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
The course is taught annually.
