- The lecture will be given to demonstrate the main points of a few selected European and international contemporary theories of translation: a) descriptive translation studies and polysysteme theory b) Functionalist approaches to translation, particularly the skopos theory c) the history of translation as a scientific discipline. The seminar will focus on the application of theory selected major theories on translation of specific tasks and problems. The seminar will also serve as a methodological preparation for writing translatological thesis.
- Syllabus
- 1/ The lecture will be given to demonstrate the main points of a few selected European and international contemporary theories of translation: a) descriptive translation studies and polysysteme theory b) Functionalist approaches to translation, particularly the skopos theory c) the history of translation as a scientific discipline. 2/ The seminar will focus on the application of theory selected major theories on translation of specific tasks and problems. The seminar will also serve as a methodological preparation for writing translatological thesis.

- Teaching methods
- 1 / The lecture will be given to demonstrate the main points of a few selected European and international contemporary theories of translation: a) Functionalist approaches to translation, particularly the skopos theory b) descriptive translation studies and polysysteme theory c) the history of translation as a scientific discipline. 2 / The seminar will focus on the application of theory selected major theories on translation of specific tasks and problems. Students will translate mostly fiction, but also professional texts, and will apply the theoretical postulates of the theoretical schools (according to specification). The seminar will also serve as a methodological preparation for writing translatological thesis.
- Assessment methods
- Project (50% of final score) - essay consigned one week before the credit week (about 15 pages). The theme of the project will focus on the validation of some hypotheses of the Polysystem theory on the corpus of original and translated texts. Written exam at the end of the semester - translation of text from French to Czech with the precise assignment and with the commentary in French, justifying the solutions (50% of the final score).
