- Course objectives
- The objectives of the course are a) to familiarize students with the basic techniques of light microscopy and the possibilities of processing biological material in the form of various types of microscopic slides; b) to teach students the basics of implementation and evaluation of simple biological experiments; c) to familiarize students with the basics of computer image analysis.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this practical course, students should be able - to use various techniques of light microscopy efficiently; - to prepare various kinds of zoological mounts; - to take and efectivelly process microphotographs; - to utilize some simple techniques of image analysis; - to conduct simple biological experiment including adequate statistical treatment of the data.
- Syllabus
- Botanical techniques: Documentation - hand drawing, photomicrographs and their processing. Simple technique of image analysis - leaf area measurement. Design and statistical treatment of simple biological experiments. Zoological techniques: Native preparations. Vital staining. Whole mounts, sections, squashes, dry mounts. Fixation. Fixatives. Staining. Aqueous media. Non-aqueous mounting media.
