Course objectives
Phylogenetic system of chordates focused on vertebrates. Vertebrate evolution related to geological and geographical evolution. Understanding of relationships between higher taxa, knowledge of basic apomorphy of higher taxa.
Syllabus
  • - Chordata, characteristics, position in phylogenetic system, relationships to other Deuterostomia, ancestry and evolution.
  • - Cephalochordata, morphology, ontogeny and ecology. New discoveries of cambrian cephalochordates.
  • - Urochordata - apomorphy, morphology and ontogeny of tunicate larvae, characteristics of adult "Ascidiacea", Thaliacea and Copelata, reproduction and ecology.
  • - Vertebrata (Craniata), characteristics, comparative anatomy, ecology, behaviour, vertebrate phylogeny.
  • - Fossil jawless vertebrates, hagfishes and lampreys.
  • - Vertebrates with jaws - gnathostomes, characteristics. Primarily aquatic fossil gnathostomes (Placodermi, Acanthodii) and living chondrichthyans.
  • - Actinopterygii and primarily aquatic Sarcopterygii, morphology, ecology, behaviour and system.
  • - Tetrapoda: Origin, land colonization, fossil groups and living amphibians (Lissamphibia), morphology, ecology, behaviour and system.
  • - Tetrapoda: Amniota - dry climate adaptation in morphology, physiology, reproduction, ontogeny and behaviour; "reptiles" - characteristics, ecology, system.
  • - Aves - morphology, flight adaptation, ecology - nesting, instictive behaviour, system.
  • - Mammalia - morphology, ecology, adaptive behaviour, system.
