The basic turn on the balance beam is a 180° turn on both legs. The gymnast tries for maximum tiptoe stand, the weight is distributed on both feet. The arms pass from sideward to upward position and then back during the turn.
The cause of the rotational movement during the turn on both legs is the application of a couple. These are the forces generated as reaction to the forces exerted by one and the other leg on the balance beam. The rotational effect of this pair of forces is determined by their magnitude and their distance. The vertical axis about which the body rotates passes through the centre of gravity and the support base.
- Feet far apart.
- Bent lower limbs.
- Unstrengthened body.

Physical preparation 1
