Balance beam 5 – Cat leap
The gymnast begins the movement by a step forward with her takeoff leg. This is followed by a take off from this lower limb with a forward kick of the bent swing leg. In the flight phase, both limbs are switched in front of the body. The gymnast lands on her swing leg, then her takeoff leg. During the jump, her arms stay sideward or perform forward lateral circles.
It is a leap in a forward motion. Therefore, the takeoff force is directed obliquely upwards. The gymnast can create a more dynamic takeoff by moving her arms in forward lateral circles. In this case, their momentum is transferred to the trunk, or the centre of gravity of the body. In the flight phase, the centre of gravity moves along a parabolic curve. The gymnast reduces the impact forces of the landing by decelerating the speed of the movement for a longer period of time through sequential landing on one and the other lower limb.
- Forward lean of the trunk.
- Low flight phase.
- Insufficient height of the lower limbs.

Physical preparation 1
We develop explosive strength of the lower limbs.
