- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Biochemistry (programme PřF, N-CH)
- Course objectives
- Graduates of the course acquire basic terms and principles from general and applied microbiology, including virology. Graduates differentiate and compare prokaryotes versus eukaryotes. Further, they compare archaebacteria with bacteria. They name and explain the features and functions of structures found in bacteria. They differentiate among photosynthetic, chemoautotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria in terms how they obtain energy. They illustrate the importance of bacteria as pathogens and describe benefits of bacteria in industry and environment. Graduates name the most important eukaryotic microorganisms, recognize their structural and physiological differences and illustrate their practical applications.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to microbiology - recommended literature, assessment methods and criteria, history of microbiology. 2. Archaea - cell structure and function, extremely halophilic and extremely thermophilic archaea, methanogenic archaea. 3. Bacteria - cell structure and function, bacterial motility and endospores. 4.
