Prerequisites
The knowledge of English at the intermediate level.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The exam is on B2 level according to CEFR. For successful passing of the exam we recommend to attend the third and the fourth semesters of English for Specific Purposes.
The main objectives of the course are the following:
1)students should be able to communicate in more complicated situations
2)students should be able to orientate in more complicated specialist texts 3)students should be able to understand more complex recordings
4)students should be able to write more complicated texts, letters,....
5)students should use grammar at advanced level Exam:
a) grammar test
b) specialist text
B. Oral part:
a) presentation of a topic from the study field
b) additional discussion to the presentation
Syllabus
  • 1.Written part: a) academic part - grammar of a specialist text 1. Extending grammar from JA001 i.e. items 1 - 17 2. Nouns – plurals of words of Latin and Greek origin (e.g. nucleus-nuclei) 3. Word formation - prefixes and sufixes II (e.g. malnutrition, counterbalance,...) 4. Conjunctions (e.g. however, even though, while ...) 5. Collocations of verbs do, make, have, take, give (collocation = typical combination of words, e.g. to make a suggestion, to take notes...) 6. Sequence of tenses 7. Modal verbs with past infinitive - expressing of uncertainity, probability in the past (he must have done, he may have done, he can't have done...) - recommendation (you should have done) 8. Conditional clauses – all types 9. Optative clauses (I wish you were here) 10. Subject and infinitive (He is said to be clever.) 11. Object and infinitive (I want you to help me.) b) Specialist text - dictionary can be used (understanding the text, summary) 2.Oral part: Presentation of a specialist text related to the field of study - own choice, or presenation related to own project - 10 minutes with using visual aids and all presentation techniques + discussion ( structure: introduction, main body with signalling devices, ending including summary).
