Offensive Rebounds

Offensive Rebounds is an action when player tries to tip the ball into the basket, catch it by both hands or tipping to a playmate (not recommend to do often). By successful offensive rebound team get new shot attempt. By good rebound rise a self-confidence of the team and has a positive influence to team shooting rate. We could identify following presumption of successful offensive rebound:

  1. An ability to fight out a good position for rebound (beside work of legs and body player has an option to use so called swimming technique when with help of arms “swims” to the ball)
  2. Timing of jump and good hop.

From the professional point of view we consider important table of statistic of rebounds after shot in the game. These should help coaches (players) in this field. In our publications we comes from statistic data according to rebound zones by Paye (1996), who mentions that balls shot from zone A rebound into zone A in 95%, balls shot from zone B rebound into zone B in 70%, balls shot from zone C rebound into zone C in 95% (Fig. 70).

Next, Paye (1996) states statistic of rebound distances by the position the shot was made. Shots made from area X rebound into area Y in 60%, from area Y equable rebound to the shooter/from the shooter and from area Z balls rebound in 70% to opposite side then the shot was made (Fig. 71).

From text shown follows that it concern tactically-physical prerequisites of individuals, mainly the anticipation of player, feeling of “wanting the rebound” and connected nature of player; It is known from praxis there is necessary to practise these actions highly precisely. In not sufficient just to say in game: “go for a rebound”. Players must be targeted devote to rebound goal. First steps of offensive rebound practise we place during the practise of shooting without defence when players are said to rebound all their attempts also the successful ones. Lately, it is most appropriate to combine the offensive rebound with player´s covering after shot (defensive rebound).

For exercise mastery we show complex of steps, which leads to adoption of offensive rebound technique.

Exercise methodology:

  • Training of technique for offensive rebound – first, shot comes just from move of legs and wrist (10x right hand, 10x left hand) – shot from straight arm, by wrist to directshot
  • The same exercise, but work of forearm, in training 10 x right, 10 x left hand
  • Ball rebound – jump and its timing: passes in pairs with bounce from the desk (Fig. 72) distance about 1,5 m – both hands, left, right) 10 x by both hands

  • Rebound – jump and its timing; individual throws to the desk – with bounce x without bounce x with shot – learn from nearly straight arms just move of wrist in training, 10 x just both hands
  • Ball rebound – jump and its timing: line, 1 ball, 4 players – players throw ball to the desk without bounce and run to the end of the line (Fig. 73), 90x times or until fall of ball with 3 repetition

  • Rebound after action (ball thrown by coach, possibly with voice signal), player shot after rebound with correct technique – with bounce, without bounce: after turn, after a dip, a front roll (footstool!!), after slalom (Fig. 74), and 5 x times in training
Fig. 74: Shot after slalom

  • Shot after front roll
  • Taps from the wall – from the desk from the floor – from desk in jump – just right, changing of left and right – throw + 4x tips by left and right and then score with changing of sides, 10x by left, 10x by right
  • Individual´s taps with switching the sides – 3x switch and tap, all in jump, 3 repetitions
  • Taps in pairs – defender gives a ball and push the forward from the good position, forwards runs to the defender – emphasis on movement of gravity centre to the basket no to back jump (Fig. 75), after 10x attempts switch of players

  • (Hook shot) Lay-in technique – in space – knee whip, thwack to the ear, handling technique and lifting of ball, arm stretching technique and shooting just by wrist, position of head, gravity impulse
    • Under the basket in the 45°angle
    • Under the basket with a rebound, turn and shot by opposite hand from the other side – 10x repetitions
  • (Hook shot) Lay-in technique – step in, heft to the defender, rejection – using of foam bar and desk for pushing – 10x repetition
  • Over step after lay-up – ball handling technique, dribbling between the legs, whip of stepping leg, gravity work, ball handling and lifting of ball, arm stretching technique and shooting just by wrist, position of head, gravity impulse, rejection – using of foam bar and desk for pushing – 10x repetition
  • After-rebound technique – semi hook shot – fake, overstep, both legs jump, shot – 10x repetition
  • After rebound technique – semi hook shot – fake, overstep, both legs jump, shot – 10x repetition.

Offensive rebound exercises

Exercise description 1
2 players, 1 ball

Exercise oriented just to rebounds, players’ goal is to rebound after shot (no difference if successful or not) to rebound more balls than their opponent without bounce with an effort to fast shot (Fig. 76.)

Fig. 76: Ball pulling practise
Fig. 76: Ball pulling practise

Exercise description 2
4 players -2 teams, line, 1 ball

Exercise oriented just to rebounds, players‘goal is to rebound for own team after coach´s shot, team which swap round twice wins (Fig. 77).

Fig. 77: Ball pulling practise

1. Exercise description 3
4 players, 1 ball

Exercise oriented to rebounds, player no. 2 and 3 is to rebound after player no. 4’s shot (no difference if successful or not) without bounce with an effort to fast shot. Who scores moves to the player no. 1’s position, passer to post 4 and player no. 4 to rebound position (Fig. 78).

Fig. 78: Rebound practise

Exercise description 4
3 players, 1 ball, forward, defender, shooter

Free throw rebound practise (Fig. 79). Shooter stays, if he scores. If the ball is gained by rebounding forward he continues with a goal to score. If he succeeds he switches with the shooter. If defender rebound, he switches with the shooter.

Exercise description 5
4 players, 1 ball, 2 passers, 2 forward, 2 defenders

Player standing at three-point line making random passes and shots (Fig. 80). After shot they seek for offensive rebound. Way of finishing and switching is determined by coach.
