Study-related information

  • Parts of the final state examination and its content
The state final exam consists of two parts: (1) an oral exam of the theory and history of the media and (2) the defense of the diploma thesis.

The state final exam from the theory and media history verifies the knowledge gained in the compulsory theoretical courses. The knowledge of the compulsory literature given in these courses and the ability of its critical interpretation and application to a particular problem in the field of media studies is tested.
The defense of the diploma thesis then verifies the knowledge and skills acquired in the specialization and the non-compulsory courses. The diploma thesis examines the ability to apply these knowledge and skills in student's own analytical and project work.
  • Suggestion of theses topics and the topics of defended theses
In the "Media research and analytics" specialization, the diploma theses take form of research papers based on the collection and analysis of data collected by the students or on secondary analysis of already existing data. The theses can typically draw on qualitative and quantitative research of media audiences and users of media technologies, qualitative and quantitative analysis of media content and mediated interpersonal and group communication, on research of media organizations and actors involved in them, and on research in the field of media history. Typical topics of qualification in this specialization are:
    - The risks of adolescent's use of social media
    - The role of new media in political activism and civic participation
    - The change of notion of primetime at today's convergent media audiences
    - Media image of brexit in Czech and Austrian news: comparative perspective
    - Analysis of the discursive construction of the so-called migration crisis in Czech news media
    - Popular content reception of Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic: an example of a diaspora audience
    - Technological and organizational convergence and changes in editorial culture in Czech daily newspapers
    - The image of the Soviet Union in Czech newspapers during the Second Republic
