Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The exam will assess whether the student is capable of demonstrating the following B2 CEFR-level skills in professional language:

Understanding the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including specialized discussions within their field of expertise.
Communicating fluently and spontaneously to a certain extent, which allows for regular interaction with other users of English without causing undue strain on either party.
Interpreting information from spoken discourse.
Presenting a specialized text related to their field of study using advanced presentation techniques.
Discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both specialized and general topics.
Using interaction strategies, such as expressing agreement or disagreement, asking for others’ opinions, participating in discussions, etc.
Learning outcomes
The exam will assess whether the student is capable of handling the following skills at the B2 CEFR level - specialized language:

Ability to understand spoken language, including grasping the main ideas of both propositionally and linguistically complex speeches (e.g., parts of lectures, interviews) on specific and abstract topics within an academic context.
Knowledge of specific and academic vocabulary, as well as simple and more complex grammar, with minimal inaccuracies.
Ability to use functional language tools in specialized written communication.
Ability to present a specialized text related to the studied field using advanced presentation techniques.
Discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both general and specialized topics.
Speaking about their field with both basic and advanced vocabulary.
Actively participating in discussions on general and academic topics using interaction strategies, such as expressing agreement/disagreement, asking for others’ opinions, taking turns to speak, etc.

  • 1. Written Component: Presentation Abstract
  • 2. Oral Component
  • a. Presentation of a Specialized Text: Present a text related to your field of study on a topic of your choice. The content should be clear and understandable for an audience from other fields. The presentation should last 10 minutes and make use of various presentation techniques and, if applicable, visual aids. You must also demonstrate the ability to respond to questions from the audience.
  • b. Discussion on a topic related to academia: Engage in a discussion on a topic related to studies, science, and research. For more details, refer to the interactive syllabus of the course.

Before Registering for the JA002 Exam:

It is recommended to complete the CJV_DIAL course. The purpose of CJV_DIAL is to assess your level of English proficiency before enrolling in the English exams. Completion of the Dialang test is recommended for all students, and mandatory for first-year bachelor’s students. This course requires completing three sections of the online Dialang diagnostic test and recording the results in the course’s ROPOT.

The JA002 Exam Content:

The exam assesses academic skills (presentation, discussion of presented topics, and discussion on academic themes) and general and specialised language at the B2 level.

Preparation for the JA002 Exam:

Optional seminars in specialized English (03 and 04) are available to help with preparation (JALS03-04, JAC03-04, JAF03-04, JAG03-04, JAM03-04, JAZ03-04, and JAT03-04). For more details, refer to:

  • 1. Written part: presentation abstract Students will write an abstract for their presentation. Word range: 150-200 words
  • 2.Oral part: Presentation of a specialist topic related to the field of study - own choice, or presentation related to own project - 10 minutes with using visual aids and all presentation techniques + discussion (structure: introduction, main body with signalling devices, ending including summary). 3. Academic discussion (10 minutes)

The exam verifies that the student has:
Ability to understand the main idea of a spoken utterance at a more advanced level(e.g.: part of a lecture, an interview) regarding both specific and more abstract topics within an academic context.
Knowledge of specific and academic vocabulary, and grammar structures at B2 level according to CEFR (direct/indirect questions, transition phrases, word formation, sentence transformations).
Ability to use functional language in a specialized written text (classify, describe cause and effect, compare, define).
Ability to present a specialized topic related to the field of study using advanced presentation techniques
discuss common topics and those related to their field of study
talk about one´s field of study using topic-based vocabulary
use argumentation

Syllabus
  • 1. Written part: a) Integrated task (listening, reading and writing) Students will write a synthesis essay (300-400 words) in which they will combine information from two sources: a video on a general scientific topic, which will be provided, and a text of their choice, for example an academic, scientific or a popular science article in the English language taken from a credible source such as a journal, the science section of a newspaper/magazine, or a book chapter. The recommended length of the source article is between 500 and 1500 words.
  • b) Presentation abstract Students will write an abstract for their presentation. Word range: 150-200 words
  • 2.Oral part: Presentation of a specialist topic related to the field of study - own choice, or presentation related to own project - 10 minutes with using visual aids and all presentation techniques + discussion (structure: introduction, main body with signalling devices, ending including summary).

Learning outcomes
The exam verifies that the student has:
Ability to understand the main idea of a spoken utterance at a more advanced level(e.g.: part of a lecture, an interview) regarding both specific and more abstract topics within an academic context.
Knowledge of specific and academic vocabulary, and grammar structures at B2 level according to CEFR (direct/indirect questions, transition phrases, word formation, sentence transformations).
Ability to understand main ideas of simple specialized texts, to find there synonyms, to follow logical connections and coherence within such type of texts, and to find the author’s stance.
Ability to use functional language in a specialized written text (classify, describe cause and effect, compare, define).
Ability to present a specialized topic related to the field of study using advanced presentation techniques
discuss common topics and those related to their field of study
talk about one´s field of study using topic-based vocabulary
use argumentation

Reading - subject-specific text - logical connections, synonyms, missing words c) Writing - abstract for the presentation, app. 160 words. d) Self-assessment/reflection In this writing task you will give your examiner your total score and write a reflection on your learning based on this test result. You can also outline your strengths and weaknesses in the English language based on these test scores in each part of the online test as well as your strategy and aims for future development in this area. The minimum length is 250 words.
  • 2.Oral part:
  • Presentation of a specialist text related to the field of study - own choice, or presentation related to own project - 10 minutes with using visual aids and all presentation techniques + discussion (structure: introduction, main body with signalling devices, ending including summary).

Learning outcomes
The exam verifies that the stutdent has:
Ability to understand the main idea of a spoken utterance at a more advanced level(e.g.: part of a lecture, an interview) regarding both specific and more abstract topics within an academic context.
Knowledge of specific and academic vocabulary, and grammar structures at B2 level according to CEFR (direct/indirect questions, transition phrases, word formation, sentence transformations).
Ability to understand main ideas of simple specialized texts, to find there synonyms, to follow logical connections and coherence within such type of texts, and to find the author’s stance.
Ability to use functional language in a specialized written text (classify, describe cause and effect, compare, define).
Ability to present a specialized topic related to the field of study using advanced presentation techniques
discuss common topics and those related to their field of study
talk about one´s field of study using topic-based vocabulary
use argumentation

The exam assesses student´s ability to
understand specialized texts/discourse
identify key ideas
formulate key ideas
transfer information from the text
classify, describe cause and effect, compare, define
summarize an advanced text related to their field of study
present a specialized text related to the field of study using advanced presentation techniques
discuss common topics and those related to their field of study
talk about one´s field of study using topic-based vocabulary
use argumentation

Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The exam is on B2 level according to CEFR. For successful passing of the exam we recommend to attend the third and the fourth semesters of English for Specific Purposes.
The main objectives of the course are the following:
1)students should be able to communicate in more complicated situations
2)students should be able to orientate in more complicated specialist texts 3)students should be able to understand more complex recordings
4)students should be able to write more complicated texts, letters,....
5)students should use grammar at advanced level Exam:
a) grammar test
b) specialist text
B. Oral part:
a) presentation of a topic from the study field
b) additional discussion to the presentation

  • 1.Written part: a) academic part - grammar of a specialist text 1. Extending grammar from JA001 i.e. items 1 - 17 2. Nouns – plurals of words of Latin and Greek origin (e.g. nucleus-nuclei) 3. Word formation - prefixes and sufixes II (e.g. malnutrition, counterbalance,...) 4. Conjunctions (e.g. however, even though, while ...) 5. Collocations of verbs do, make, have, take, give (collocation = typical combination of words, e.g. to make a suggestion, to take notes...) 6. Sequence of tenses 7. Modal verbs with past infinitive - expressing of uncertainity, probability in the past (he must have done, he may have done, he can't have done...) - recommendation (you should have done) 8. Conditional clauses – all types 9. Optative clauses (I wish you were here) 10. Subject and infinitive (He is said to be clever.) 11.   • 1.Písemná část a) Akademická část - gramatika odborného textu 1. Prohloubení gramatiky JA001A , tj. body 1 - 17 2. Podstatná jména – množné číslo slov latinského a řeckého původu (např. nucleus-nuclei) 3. Tvoření slov - pomocí předpon a přípon II (např. malnutrition, counterbalance...) 4. Spojovací výrazy (např. however, even though, while ...) 5. Kolokace sloves do, make, have, take, give (kolokace = častá spojení slov, např. to make a suggestion, to take notes...) 6. Souslednost časů 7. Způsobová slovesa s minulým infinitivem vyjadřování jistoty, pravděpodobnosti v minulosti (he must have done, he may have done, he can't have done...) doporučení (you should have done) 8. Podmínkové věty – všechny typy (Kdybych to byl věděl, nechodil bych tam. – If I had knot it, I wouldn't gone there.) 9. Přací věty (I wish you were here) 10. Vazba podmětu s infinitivem (He is said to be clever.) 11. Syllabus (in Czech)
  • 1.Písemná část a) Akademická část - gramatika odborného textu 1. Prohloubení gramatiky JA001A , tj. body 1 - 17 2. Podstatná jména – množné číslo slov latinského a řeckého původu (např. nucleus-nuclei) 3. Tvoření slov - pomocí předpon a přípon II (např. malnutrition, counterbalance...) 4. Spojovací výrazy (např. however, even though, while ...) 5. Kolokace sloves do, make, have, take, give (kolokace = častá spojení slov, např. to make a suggestion, to take notes...) 6. Souslednost časů 7. Způsobová slovesa s minulým infinitivem vyjadřování jistoty, pravděpodobnosti v minulosti (he must have done, he may have done, he can't have done...) doporučení (you should have done) 8. Podmínkové věty – všechny typy 9. Přací věty (I wish you were here) 10. Vazba podmětu s infinitivem (He is said to be clever.) 11. Vazba předmětu s infinitivem (I want you to help me.) b) Odborný text - slovník k dispozici (porozumění textu, shrnutí) Překlad odborného textu A Č (5 normostran anglického textu, tj. 1800 znaků bez mezer, včetně uvedení zdroje a slovníčku klíčových odborných výrazů cca 15 slov) Originál textu a překlad (včetně uvedení zdroje) je nutno odevzdat 4 pracovní dny před termínem zkoušky. 2.Ústní část: Prezentace odborného textu vztahujícího se ke studovanému oboru - dle vlastního výběru vycházející ze zvoleného překladu, případně prezentace týkající se vlastního projektu - v rozsahu 10 minut s využitím názorných pomůcek a veškerých prezentačních technik + následná diskuse (tj. struktura: introduction, main body se signalling devices, ending včetně summary).
